Well, what a day we had yesterday! It was lovely to meet Kirkby Malham Primary School for the first time. I am really looking forward to meeting them again. Hopefully, next time they will visit Bowling Park and we can show them all the wonderful things that Bradford has to offer.
What did you think of Kirkby Malham Primary? What are the differences between our School and their School?
‘Pupil Voice and Participation England’ have sent me their most recent national school council newsletter for us to read. There is all sorts of information about school councils across the country, have a look and see if you can get any ideas for our school council!
The next school council meeting will be on Thursday 17th February. We will be designing our new SMILE week questionnaire so have a think about some questions we can ask everyone.
Our lovely school council blog has been featured on the website Involver.org.uk. It’s a great website all about school councils and democracy (which means making fair decisions by voting - a bit like how we make decisions in our school council meetings).
Here’s what they said about us – ‘A great school council blog, with lots of people commenting and contributing’. Well done everyone! It’s nice to see that other schools recognise the brilliant work we are doing at Bowling Park.
There are lots of links to other schools’ school council websites, check some of them out and see if you can see any great ideas that we could use on our blog or in meetings. My favourite is Glaitness Primary School’s website; they made a huge picture of Pudsey Bear for Children In Need out of 2p and 1p coins which they then donated to charity!
Happy New Year to all the School Council! I hope you had a lovely holiday. I am very much looking forward to seeing you all, I feel like we haven’t had a meeting for ages!
A few updates -
1. The posters that the health and safety group made have started to go up around school. Hopefully you have noticed the ‘don’t forget to flush the toilet’ posters on the bathroom doors.
2. The posters from our road safety day will be up soon too. I am currently trying to decide how to stick them outside without the rain washing them away, which would be a great shame after you all put so much effort in to making them.
3. There will be a school council meeting on Thursday 20th January. I will let you know more details nearer the time.
Hope you have all enjoyed the first 2 weeks back at school,
I hope you enjoyed our road safety afternoon today. I thought it was brilliant, my favourite bit was having a ride in the police car!
What was your favourite bit and what did you find out about road safety? Do you remember what the speed limit of the road outside New Cross Street is? Why is it this speed limit?
I was really impressed with the posters you made. Hopefully we will be able to stick them up in the entrances to remind people to drive and park safetly. Here are some of the best posters from today -
Hope you have had a great week and are looking forward to our road safety afternoon tomorrow with Lauren the Policewomen. I am really excited about it and can’t wait to see what activities we will be doing!
When I came into work this morning there was a collection of beautiful posters sat neatly on my desk. Thank you very much Ifrah and Aminah for these, they look great! I am going to ask Mrs Tordoff to laminate them so we can stick them in the toilets and encourage children to behave properly when they visit the bathroom. Here are their posters -
In a couple of weeks we will be meeting Lauren, a poliewomen who specialises in road safety. As part of National Road Safety Week we will be discussing with Lauren all the ways we can improve road safety in BD4 and BD5.
Before the meeting I’d like you to have a think about the following questions:
Why is road safety important?
Thinking about road safety where you live, do you think there are any problems that need fixing? You could think about cars driving too fast or children crossing the road in dangerous areas.
Do you have any ideas how we can help adults and children to be safer on the road?
Ask an adult who drives what helps them to be a safe driver. What signs are there on the roads that tell drivers how to be safe? See if you can spot some of them on your way to school.
For more ideas, check out this great website – Road Safety. It has lots of games and things to do that will help you to start thinking about being safe on the road.
Enjoy,
Miss Phimister
P.S. Don’t forget the poster tasks I’ve set you for next Wednesday. We need to tell the rest of the School Council about all the things we’ve done on the walk today so be ready to talk about what we saw!
